KARACHI, Oct 17: A proposal is under active consideration to set up a separate force for security and protocol purpose.
After approval and establishment of the separate force, the operation branch of the police will solely concentrate on maintaining law and order and combating crime.
Inspector-General of Sindh Police Jahangir Mirza said this while speaking at a meeting held at the central police office here on Tuesday.
The meeting was convened to discuss and evolve a strategy for combating street crime in the light of directives issued by the prime minister during his recent visit to Karachi.
CCPO Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, Additional IG for Investigation Syed Nayar Husnain Zaidi, AIG of Special Branch Babar Khattak, AIG of Sindh Tariq Jamil, DIG of Admin Zafar Ahmed Farooqui, DIG of Traffic Falak Khurshed, DIG of Operations Syed Mushtaq Shah and other officials attended the meeting.
The IG directed the police force to trace out the people committing street crime and launch an organized drive against them. In this respect, he formed a special committee headed by the additional IG of Special Branch to work under proactive policing. The DIG of Investigation zones I, II and the DIG of CID will be the members of this committee.
He asked the additional IG to examine the requirement of Karachi police including manpower, ammunition, transport etc and submit a detailed report to the government. He also asked for identifying ghost employees of police force for taking action against them. Moreover, the police personnel sitting in different offices doing unnecessary work should be deployed in the field, he added.
Reviewing the performance of the Anti-Car Lifting Cell, the IG directed for ensuring intelligence about the groups involved in this crime and their modus operandi including the markets where these vehicles are sold besides the elements patronizing them. He sought such report in a week to initiate effective action. The IG stressed on reorganizing the ACLC and changing the checkpoints or increasing the number of checkpoints if necessary.
The meeting was informed that there was contradiction in the statistics provided by the Special Branch, the CPLC about thefts/snatching of vehicles and mobile phones. On this, the IG constituted a committee consisting of AIG of Operations Abdul Razak Cheema and Town Police Officer of SITE Javed Akbar to check the record and find out the factors leading to contradiction.
Jahangir Mirza further directed that effective steps be taken in coordination with other provinces for taking action and arresting absconding criminals.
