GUJRANWALA, Oct 16: The Punjab government has decided to upgrade the post of District Police Officer (DPO) as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in four cities — Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan and Rawalpindi, it is learnt here on Monday.
Sources said that the government wanted to curb the street crime and maintaining law and order by enhancing the police capability.
They said the government had decided in principle that senior officers of the rank of grade-20 (DIG) would be deployed in big cities after Eidul Fitr.
Additional IG and regional police chief Malik Muhammad Iqbal cancelled the leaves of almost all police employees and tightened the security at ll important places, including railway stations, bus stands, shopping centers, banks and crowded area, due to Eid.
He warned that inefficient police officials would be taken to task if they showed any negligence.
Speaking at a meeting, Mr Iqbal directed all DPOs and other senior police officers to monitor the performance of police officials besides security arrangements in their jurisdiction.
Disqualified: Mito Bhaiki union council nazim and naib nazim were disqualified on Monday by an election tribunal for submitting fake documents.
Petitioners Muhammad Asif Mito and Hafiz Nazirur Rehman, who were defeated in the election, submitted before an election tribunal in Hafizabad nazim Rashid Irfan and naib nazim Navid Ahmad Nisar filed fake documents in support of their age. They were not eligible to contest election of nazim and naib nazim due to less age, the petitioners added.
They appealed to the tribunal to declare them successful in the light of a Supreme Court decision.
The tribunal accepted their plea and issued a notification in this regard. Meanwhile, the tribunal dismissed the petition of defeated minority councillor Dr Shahid Gill against councillor Atif Aziz.
The petitioner accused Mr Aziz of rigging the election.
CLASH: Four people, including a woman, were shot at and injured in a clash between two rival groups in Kot Shahan on Monday.
Brothers and police employees Nazir and Amin have a dispute. The family members of both the brothers had an exchange of harsh words and opened fire on each other as a result of which Amin, his son Sadam, wife Kausar and Shahid, sustained injuries. They were rushed to the DHQ hospital where the condition of Kausar was stated to be serious.
The cantonment police have registered a case against Qaiser, Faisal, Yasir Imran, etc. It is learnt that people took refuge in their houses due to severe exchange of fire between the groups.
