NAWABSHAH, Oct 16: Growers of Chan Babu, Dhoro Naro, Panjo Chan, Nawaz Dahiri Jheemal and Khiyarion minors of Nusrat irrigation division held a protest rally, against the water rotation programme here on Monday.

The rally after marching on different thoroughfares, reached the local press club where the protesters blocked the road by staging a sit-in. They also observed a token hunger strike.

Carrying banners and placards, the rally participants shouted slogans against the Nusrat irrigation division officials.

Led by Nazim UC Gupchhani, Engineer Abdul Rasool Brohi, Jango Dahiri, Yaqoob Kakepoto, Sattar Rind, Juman Dars and others, the protesters alleged that the officials of Nusrat division had created artificial shortage of water and were selling water to the influential landlords.

They said that about 25,000 acres of land was affected due to which their lives have become miserable.

They complained that no action was taken to redress the problems of growers despite repeated complaints.

They demanded of the irrigation minister to take notice of artificial shortage of water and ensure provision of water to their minors.

The District Naib Nazim, Abdul Haq Jamali and XEN Nusrat irrigation division, visited the hunger strikers’ camp and assured that water would be provided to them after which the protesters called off their protest

SUICIDE ATTEMPT: An accused attempted to commit suicide in Jam Saheb police lockup and was admitted to the PMC hospital here on Monday.

According to police, Ghulam Qadir Solangi, was absent from court in a case (No.23/05) of Jam Saheb police station for which the judicial magistrate issued his arrest warrants and police arrested him.

He was locked up in Jam Saheb police station where he tried to commit suicide by cutting his neck with a blade but was saved by police personnel on duty.

The injured was brought to PMC hospital, where he was admitted. An FIR was lodged against the injured.

FINE IMPOSED: The Executive committee of People’s Medical College, Nawabshah, imposed fine and warned some members of the paramedical staff for violation of rules and regulations, absence from their duty and black-mailing the administration.

A press release issued here on Monday said that a meeting of the executive committee of the College, which was held under the chairmanship of principal, Professor Ali Akbar Ghumro, termed the allegations of paramedical staff against professors for misusing college vehicles baseless.
