KARACHI: Coordination committee for Karachi formed: Better amenities pledged


KARACHI, Oct 16: The federal government has constituted a “Coordination Committee for Karachi”, headed by the Sindh governor to provide better civic amenities to the Karachiites and to the service on modern lines.

In this regard, a meeting was held at the Governor’s House on Monday under the chairmanship of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan in which details of the committee in question were examined.

The meeting was attended by Senior Minister Sardar Ahmed, Home Adviser Waseem Akhtar, Finance Adviser M.A. Jalil, City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, Principal Secretary Saleem Khan and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ibad said that Karachi was an emerging economic hub of the region and the economic engine of the country. He pointed out that the progress of this city would result in the progress of the entire and prosperity of the people.

The governor said that coordination was required between various organisations for carrying out development process and providing facilities while collective efforts were needed to give a civilised look to this seventh biggest city of the world.

It was for this reason that President Pervez Musharrraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the federal and provincial governments were extending cooperation for the uplift of this city.

The governor said that for the first time in the country's history, the Karachi-based federal government organisations were playing their role in the development process.

He expressed the hope that the establishment of the special coordination committee for Karachi by the federal government would prove to be an important milestone in the development of this city.

The governor observed that the coordination committee would prove instrumental in bringing harmony in matters like uniform construction laws and regulations, framing of master plan, land use etc.

The 22-member coordination committee will be headed by the Sindh governor while its members will include, Sindh chief secretary, additional chief secretary (member/secretary), city nazim, secretaries finance, law, local government, member (LU) Sindh, provincial police officer, chairmen of Karachi Port Trust and Port Qasim Authority, Export Promotion Bureau, Pakistan Steel Mills, chairperson EPZA, MDs KESC and SSGC, DG PTCL, DHA administrator, DG NLC, representative of HQ 5-Corps, divisional superintendent railway and DCO CDGK.
