SADIQABAD, Oct 15: The Girls Degree College, Liaquatpur, is facing an acute shortage of the staff. With the sanctioned strength of 21 lecturers, including the post of principal in BPS-19, the college has in its roll only eight lecturers, which are quite insufficient to cater to the need of over 1,000 students.

This was stated by office-bearers of different organisations, including Development Organisation president Waheed Rushdi, secretary-general Nighat Chaudhry, Citizen Action Committee for Women joint coordinator Asma Farooq and Citizen Welfare Society chairman Maher Abdul Waheed while talking to reporters here.

They revealed that only one assistant professor was performing her duty against the five sanctioned posts of the principal, English, history, physics and Urdu subjects.

They said the college had no lecturer for the subjects of economics, Persian, psychology, statistics, physical education and library science.

Likewise, only one Islamiat lecturer was available for the two sanctioned posts of the subject.

Students were the worst-sufferer who were compelled to engage private tuitions. They said several students had to relinquish their studies because their parents could not afford the expenses of tutors.

Mrs Shaista Waqar, the acting college principal, gave out that the students were forced to carry on their studies in five subjects with the help of private tutors.

She said that a team from Lahore had also visited Liaquatpur to assess the problems faced by colleges throughout the district, but so far nothing had been done to look up the situation.

She said that girls’ colleges in Sadiqabad and Khanpur had been provided with the facility of tubewell and halls, but the degree college in Liaquatpur was entirely ignored.
