Call to set up tobacco corporation

Published October 16, 2006

SWABI, Oct 15: Jamaat-i-Islami MNA Mohammad Usman has demanded establishment of a tobacco corporation on the lines of cotton and rice corporations to help the tobacco growers of the province.

The establishment of a tobacco corporation is importent for growers, he said while speaking at a press conference here on Sunday. Mr Usman said that the government had given complete autonomy to the Punjab province to utilize its rice and cotton yields according to its policy, but the farmers of the NWFP had been deprived of benefiting from their agriculture production and other natural resources.

“For the future of the tobacco crop and for the benefit of the farmers, the government should come forward to establish a tobacco corporation in the Frontier provinces,” he said.

He urged political parties to ensure protection of the rights of the province.
