KARACHI: Transporters allege harassment by police

KARACHI, Oct 15: Owners of public transport vehicles on Sunday accused traffic police of kicking off an “Eid Bhatta” drive.

The leaders of Anjuman-i-Ettehad Bus Malikan Karachi, Muhammad Ashraf Bangalori, Choudhary Muzaffar Hussain, Lala Sultan and Nazeer Bangalori in a joint statement expressed their serious concern over extortion of Bhatta and bribe by the traffic police from transporters as well as citizens all over the city.

They said that the traffic policemen on the pretext of vehicle checking were unnecessary harassing transporters and citizens just to get bribes. They charged that the traffic cops used to stop public transport buses on the road and openly demand bribe from drivers and conductors. They decried that the guards of life and property of citizens had become looters themselves.

Transporters demanded the government to rein in corrupt traffic policemen and save citizens and transporters from their atrocities.—PPI
