GE profits up

NEW YORK, Oct 13: Giant US conglomerate General Electric Co. reported on Friday a six per cent rise in third-quarter net earnings, but entertainment division NBC Universal weighed on profits.

GE said that aside from the film and television unit, all other divisions such as its infrastructure, commercial finance and healthcare arms reported higher income in the three months ended September 30.

GE, which after energy giant Exxon Mobil is the world's second-largest company in terms of market capitalisation, said its net earnings came to $4.96 billion, compared with $4.68 billion in the same quarter of 2005.
