UNITED NATIONS, Oct 9: The United Nations Security Council on Monday by acclamation recommended to the UN General Assembly that South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki- moon be appointed the next Secretary-General of the world body for five years.
As the council met amid the crisis created by North Korea’s nuclear test, its President Kenzo Oshima of Japan announced that it was unanimous in recommending Mr Ban.
United States Ambassador John Bolton, while welcoming the decision, noted the paradox in the situation between South and North Korea. Mr Ban is set to take office in January.
