Harbhajan apologises

NEW DELHI, Oct 7: India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh apologised on Saturday for offending his Sikh community by appearing in a liquor advertisement with his hair down.

Slogan-shouting protesters marched through the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in the northern state of Punjab and burnt Harbhajan's effigy after he appeared in the advertisement with team mates Mahendra Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh.

Uncut hair covered by a turban is an article of faith of the Sikh religion.

Harbhajan was asked to apologise by the religion's highest body. “I was not aware my keeping my hair out could lead to such a huge debate.”—Reuters
