KARACHI: Quintuplets, mother to leave hospital in three days

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 7: A woman who delivered quintuplets, three boys and two girls, will leave the Kharadar General Hospital in two to three days, said the medical director of the hospital on Saturday.

Parveen Abbas, 26, of Sahiwal had given premature birth to the quintuplets after a C-section on Wednesday last and she and her babies are recovering now.

The medical director, Dr Khalid Iqbal, told Dawn that the mother who was confined to bed after surgery visited for the first time her children kept in the neo-natal intensive care unit on Saturday. She was on wheelchair and was very happy to see her children for the first time, he said.

Dr Iqbal said Parveen, who had been suffering from hepatitis C as well, was recovering fast after the surgery and was also being trained to handle her quintuplets at home.

Though being kept in incubators, the children have been now made free of additional oxygen supply and they have now begun oral feeding as well, which was a good sign, he said, adding that if things went right the mother and children would be released within the next three days.

He further said that the children were born underweight and would take some time to start gaining weight further, but his team of doctors was certain that the children would survive and behave like other normal newborns as there were no more complications in their cases.
