KARACHI, Oct 5: The Provincial Public Safety and Police Complaints Commission has been notified, to be followed by the constitution of the remaining 12 districts, including Karachi District Public Safety and Police Complaints Commission soon.

This was stated by advisor on home affairs Waseem Akhtar while responding to questions of a group of journalists after his Iftar party on Thursday. He hoped that the commission would help mitigate sufferings of the people with regard to misuse of powers by the law-enforcement personnel.

The commission as envisaged in the police order 2002 would help check excesses committed by the police and help the general public, especially in the registration of FIRs. Besides, the commission enjoys the powers of civil court in summoning a person or any relevant record.

In Sindh, during last four years, the commissions were constituted in 11 districts but the government failed to implement the police order 2002 in letter and in spirit by not facilitating their recommendations while constitution of 12 more district commissions is yet to be announced.

When his attention was drawn towards increasing street crimes in the megapolis, he said all efforts were being made to ensure rule of law in the province, particularly necessary instructions had been issued to all TPOs and DIGs to take effective measures to check street crimes, including incidents of snatching cellphones. But, he said, this could only be possible if SHOs and other officials instead of sitting in the offices visit their respectable localities.

He said any official who failed to perform his duties would have to relinquish charge for a better competent and efficient official.

In reply to another question, he said as compared to the past record, the traffic management is better even after such a massive on-going development work on important arteries and for this credit goes to the city district government.

He said he would ensure that there should be no letup in the ongoing operation against dacoits and outlaws in interior and any police official found hand in gloves with the outlaws and anti-social elements would not be spared and due process would be initiated against him.

Wasim Akhter further said that the provincial government had introduced a ''special system'' in Karachi to tackle issue of growing street crimes, especially mobile-phone snatchings and after getting positive results, it would be introduced in Hyderabad and then in Sukkur.

He informed that Inspector Sarwar Commando had been arrested by the FIA for possessing a fake passport. ''Investigation is under way afterwards, after which he would be handed over to the police,” he informed.

CCPO Karachi Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, DIG Investigation Manzoor Mughar, DIG Traffic Falak Khursheed and other senior police officials were also present.

He said SHOs would be posted on merit basis and no approach would be accepted in this regard. SHOs, SDPOs and DPOs had been directed to chalk out a comprehensive strategy to eliminate the crimes from their controlled areas.
