KARACHI, Oct 4: Following the concern expressed at street crimes in Karachi and the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on the issue, Provincial Police Officer Jehangir Mirza on Wednesday held a meeting with senior police officers of Capital City Police and discussed threadbare the relevant matters.
The meeting confined itself to one point agenda -- to control street crimes in the province, especially Karachi.
It was attended by AIG Sindh, AIG Operations Sindh, AIG Special Branch, DIG administration, DIG HQ Sindh, DIG Traffic, DIG Operation, DIG Investigation I and II, SSP Security and CCPO Karachi.
The CCPO stressed upon senior police officers to adopt a workable short-term strategy to make streets of the city safe for citizen on an immediate basis.
He directed DIG Operations to assess the performance of SHOs and immediately transfer ineligible ones in order to ensure the desired results.
He gave detailed highlights of a short-term action plan in this regard.
Under the plan, he said, the high incidence areas/localities along with the modus operandi of street urchins, the actual or potential criminals, either individuals or groups, should be identified.
He directed officers to collect necessary information and intelligence about those who were receiving and selling stolen properties.
The CCPO impressed upon the officers to plan overt measures with the help of patrolling, surveillance cameras, motorcycle squads, neighbourhood watch, etc., besides involving people and seeking financial, moral and physical cooperation from traders and citizens.
Mr Mirza stressed on identifying and interrogating suspects, and said that tasks in this regard be assigned to AVCC, ADRC and ACLC to target the gangs involved and pick up their members with or without past record of crime.
The DIG Investigation I & II will pick up all suspects with past history, accused on bail, former convicts, etc. and also those indulged in receiving stolen properties, especially mobile phones.
The DIG CID will identify, trace out and pick up all members of the gangs involved in street crime, while Additional IG Special Branch will divert essential resources information about criminal gangs, performance of TPOs and SHOs to the intelligence and will also identify the police personnel involved or mixed up with criminals.
The AIG Investigation will mobilise resources for collection of crime intelligence and also organise flow of relevant information from inside jails.
The DIG Traffic will brief and motivate all traffic police to be a part of this action plan to fight street crime in Karachi.
He will assess requirements of resources, manpower, vehicles (mainly motorcycles), equipment, arms and ammunition, etc., besides surveillance cameras and mounted police.
The CCPO called for reviewing the availability of operation police on non-essential duties and said they should be used for the purpose.
He also called for having manpower from SRP (C) Training and Inspection (Saeedabad and Razakabad), T&T and PQR, besides volunteers for watch & ward (community-based).
Jehangir Mirza said that a system of immediate rewards and punishments should be devised and implemented.—APP
