Faisal to replace Inzamam

Published October 3, 2006

LAHORE, Oct 2: Middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal will replace skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq in the ICC Champions Trophy, provided the ICC technical committee gives approval to the change.

Chief selector Wasim Bari also considered two other names including Asim Kamal and Shahid Yousuf to replace Inzamam, but Faisal was selected.

The PCB had already submitted 14-member team list to the ICC for the Champions Trophy to be held in Oct-Nov in India in which the name of Inzamam was included as captain. But as the skipper has been banned for four ODIs under the charge of bringing the game into disrepute in the Oval Test against England, a replacement was necessitated.

The ICC, under the Participating Nations Agreement allows any member country to make change in the submitted squad only in case of injury to a selected player, or in exceptional cases. According to the PCB officials Inzamam's case falls in the exceptional category and now the ICC technical committee will take a final decision.
