KARACHI: 136 deprived of cars, cellphones

KARACHI, Oct 2: As many as 113 people were deprived of their vehicles and cell phones in the city on Monday.

At least 61 vehicles — 25 cars and 36 motorcycles — and 75 mobiles were taken away by bandits from different parts of the city on Monday.

Five cars were snatched at gunpoint and eight were reported stolen.

Similarly, eight motorcycles were snatched at gunpoint by bandits and 17 motorcycles were reportedly stolen.

Twentyone cell phones were snatched and as many as 49 mobile phones were reportedly stolen while five were missing.

ROBBED: In another incident, four armed bandits took away cash and jewellery from a goldsmith shop in Liaquatabad on Monday.

Police said four armed suspects came to the shop of Mohsin Jewellers, held the occupants hostage at gunpoint and fled, taking away cash and jewellery from the shop.

A duty officer of the Liaquatabad police station said so far the complaint has not disclosed the amount of losses suffered in the robbery.

Following the robbery, the jewellery market of Liaquatabad was closed by shopkeepers to lodge a protest against the robbery.

ACCIDENT: An elderly woman died and her husband was injured in a road accident in Baloch Colony.

A duty officer of the Baloch Colony police station said that the couple were in a metro cab; their vehicle was hit by a speeding private car around 6 am.

Police said they were rushed to Jinnah Hospital where the elderly lady, identified as Sarwat, 65, was pronounced dead. Her husband, Mr Alvi, 75, was admitted for treatment. Police detained the errant driver and impounded the vehicle.
