ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: A spokesman for the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) said on Sunday that a total of 1,384,309 income tax returns were filed up to September 30, 2006.

The returns filed last year till the same date were 1,152,799, showing an increase of 20 per cent, he claimed. Taxes amounting to Rs11.98 billion were paid along with the returns till September 30, as against Rs4.5 billion in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 170 per cent, he added.

The spokesman said that those who failed to furnish their returns and had applied for extension in the deadline could approach their respective income tax commissioners and file their returns within 15 days.
