China bus crash leaves 30 dead

BEIJING, Oct 1: Thirty people were killed and 20 others injured when a fully loaded bus ran through a guard rail and plunged into a river in south-western China’s Chongqing city on Sunday, state press reported.

The bus plunged some 30 meters (99 feet) into the Jialing river in downtown Chongqing on Sunday afternoon, Xinhua news agency said.

Rescuers rushed the survivors to local hospitals for emergency treatment, with one person listed in serious condition, it said.

Chongqing, one of China’s largest cities, was beginning a week-long national day holiday when the accident occurred. No other details of the wreck were immediately available.—AFP
