Valentine poised to win Punjab Cup
LAHORE, Sept 30: The four-year-old bay filly, Valentine, emerged as favourite to win the Punjab Cup which will be run over 1400m when the 5th Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Sunday.
In all ten acceptors are to contest in the feature event, a class IV, division I-II handicap race. In view of the holy month of Ramazan, races will be held in the afternoon, the first at 1.00pm.
Of the ten acceptors barring last-minute withdrawals, Valentine is the fastest of all. She had made her first appearance on the track on September 10 last and ran in a semi-fit condition, finishing fourth behind Gold Krik, Discovery and Harry Can View. She is tracking well now to make amends and pick up the spoils.Among her rivals, the chestnut colt Chan and the filly Nosheen, are prominent but both are running for the first time during this season. This will be the sixth and last race of the day.
The fifth and supporting event, the Phullarwan Plate class IV division III to be run over the distance of 1400m looks a contest among three colts namely Nosha, Golden Goal and Jut Bahadur. Chestnut colt Nosha, with two back-to-back victories will be going all out to make it a hat-trick this time and is the fastest among the three.
Equally good performer is the colt, War Admiral, who had already won two races and will be on the course to make it three in-a-row. Ferrari and Cross Ruff will be two of his ten rivals to prove thorns in his way to win top honours. This will be the fourth race of the six event card.
The acceptors in the first three races have been tightly handicapped and some close finishes could be seen by the race-fans. Two races each will be held over 900m, 1000m and 1400m respectively.
