KARACHI, Sept 29: The administration at the University of Karachi on Friday initiated action against a student for his alleged misconduct on the campus and causing disruption to academic activities.
Following disturbances caused by a group of students who were reportedly concerned over the security arrangements on the campus, university teachers at different departments expressed their resentment.
An official of the university told Dawn that the discipline committee of the university had issued a show-cause notice to A. Ahmad of MA education department on Friday.
He was asked to clarify his position that he along with some other students forced a teacher of the political science department, Samar Sultana, to suspend classes on Thursday.
In a bid to get their stand registered, Ahmad and his group-mates also insulted the teacher and turned up with an unbefitting posture, added the official, saying that a letter has been sent through courier service to the residential address of the student, while a copy of the letter would also be delivered to the student at his department.
When contacted, KU students’ adviser Prof Mohammad Ahmad Qadri said that the show-cause notice had been issued on behalf of the discipline committee and the student Ahmad was required to reply to the committee within three days.
A source said that a group of students agitated against the alleged kidnapping of one of their colleagues, S. Afzal, by another group of students from the campus on Wednesday.
It is said that S. Afzal was later found injured on a road in Sachal Goth vicinity.
In agitation on Thursday, the students’ group caused suspension of a number of ongoing teaching classes at different departments in the science and arts faculties, including the political science department.
In the meantime, according to campus sources, KU Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim expressed displeasure over the treatment meted out to a lady teacher of the political science department and directed the students’ adviser to take due action against the student concerned.
The matter had been placed before the discipline committee of the university as well, said a source, adding that the VC was of the view that those trying to sabotage the academic activities in the alma mater should be dealt sternly.
The Karachi University Teachers Society has convened a meeting on Saturday to consider the inappropriate behaviour of students with the teacher.
It deplored the threatening attitude of some students against the teacher of political science department.
