BD govt moots law for women convicts

Published September 29, 2006

DHAKA, Sept 28: The government of Bangladesh on Wednesday proposed an amendment in the law to empower jail officials to release women convicts on parole under certain conditions.

The Awami League lawmakers opposed tabling of the bill on technical grounds, staging a walkout to protest the speaker’s refusal to entertain their objection.

The bill stipulates that women convicts would be eligible for parole after serving half the term of their imprisonment if the sentence is of one year or more.

The convicts released on parole will be sent back to jail if they fail to correct their conduct or violate the conditions for parole.

They will finally be released if the officer reports after two years that the convicts have satisfactorily reformed themselves and their activities are acceptable.

The provisions are, however, not applicable for women convicts sentenced to death penalty or jailed for life or the convicts charged with sedition.
