KARACHI, Sept 27: The centralised admission committee for city colleges on Wednesday released the names and placements of 6,904 male applicants selected for admission to the first year classes of humanities faculty at 39 government colleges and higher secondary schools.
The number of students placed for admissions in the humanities group has increased almost by 90 per cent as compared to the last year. However, interest of students for the humanities group has decreased over the years, as students having passed the matriculation exams with flying numbers preferred to get admissions to commerce classes.
The placement list of the humanities for male students for the session 2006-2007 included four A-1 graders, 29 A-graders, 127 B-graders, 607 C-graders, 5481 D-graders and 625 E-graders. About 3,636 students, including one A-1 grader, two A-graders, 13 B-graders and others were placed for humanities admissions last year.
A senior education officer commenting on the situation said that qualitative changes were needed in the humanities and social sciences education at college and university levels in order to make it more attractive.
Talking to Dawn, the Centralised Admission Policy Committee Secretary Prof Mohammad Asghar Khan said that of the entire 80,000 students who applied for admission to different faculties, the number of male applicants desiring humanities group education was around 1900, which made around 2.37 per cent of the total applicants this year.
He said that originally 5,130 seats were allocated for humanities students, but that was increased up to about 7,000 in order to accommodate and place the leftover male applicants of low grades belonging to science or commerce groups. The latest list contains over 4,500 leftover candidates of groups other than humanities, he pointed out.
A maximum of 606 students were placed at Jamia Millia Degree College (Morning), where the maximum and minimum marks of admissions were 609 and 287 respectively. The placement at Govt College Razzaqabad, Degree College Quaidabad, Boys College Konkar Gadap remained substantially low in respect to their seat allocations.
