Gorcee The Great keeps form book on track
LAHORE, Sept 24: Fancied chestnut colt Gorcee The Great won the Mohammad Tughlaq Cup run over 1300 metres during the day/night Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Saturday.
The races were originally scheduled for Sunday, but were held a day earlier in view of the advent of the holy month of Ramazan.
Ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, the colt beat Sohna Billoo by four lengths. The rider of Sohna Billoo, Atif Javed was not seen at his best and failed to handle his mount properly at the dying stages. Ministry and Jewna completed the frame among 15 starters.
This was Gorcee The Great's second successive win within a fortnight. The owner Faisal Shahzad received the cup from steward Syed Parvaiz Hussain Shah.
Four-year-old colt River Dancer's quest for capturing classic races during the ongoing season remains on the course when the May day Cup winner overwhelmed his seven class IV opponents, mostly the same he had beaten earlier, to win the supporting and last event, the Minchan Abad Plate over 1300 metres.
Owned by Javed Khalid, River Dancer set his own pace and came from far behind and outpaced leaders, Harry can View and Zargar.
River Dancer took the lead at the top of stretch and rolled to four length easy victory over Harry Can View.
The winner, trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, was ridden by Shahid Rehman. This was colt's fourth win.
River Dancer's victory gave Shahid Rehman a fine hat-trick of victories when earlier he had romped home on Jago in the third and Gorcee The Great in the fourth race.
Jockey Aamir Pervez was extremely lucky to score a double through Tornado, who beat Cherry's Own by a neck due to sheer negligent riding by apprentice Atif Javed in the opener. He later brought in New Bhakkar in the second race.

Afternoon races during Ramazan
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards on Saturday decided to hold races during the holy month of Ramazan in the afternoon.
Races will be held on Sundays and start at 1pm. The last race will be held at 4.30pm, it was further decided. Senior steward, Malik Hamid Ali Noon chaired the meeting in the absence of LRC chairman Tariq Aziz.
