Premier League: Newcastle, Everton share goals, red cards

LONDON, Sept 24: Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the season and finished the day in fourth place in the Premier League after a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday.

Shola Ameobi was allowed to play on and score the opener for Newcastle after they were adjudged to have sprung Everton's offside trap in the 14th minute.

Everton equalised five minutes before halftime when Tim Cahill scored with a powerfully executed header from a Mikel Arteta cross after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

Both sides finished with 10 men after Newcastle defender Titus Bramble was sent off for picking up a second yellow card for a late sliding tackle on Leon Osman in the 75th minute.

Everton were also reduced to 10 men two minutes later when Tony Hibbert came in with a late challenge on Antoine Sibierski to earn his second yellow from referee Steve Bennett.

Everton, who would have gone second if they had won, moved on to 12 points from their opening six matches and are fourth behind Chelsea, Portsmouth and Manchester United.

Portsmouth will dislodge the champions from top spot if they beat Bolton Wanderers on Monday night.

Newcastle moved up to 12th place with seven points.

Late on Saturday, Manchester United failed to join Chelsea at the top when they were held 1-1 at Reading in the evening game – Cristiano Ronaldo rescuing a point for the Reds with a stunning strike.

Reading, who have adapted well to the Premier League after storming to promotion last season, looked on course for a famous victory against United when Irish striker Kevin Doyle held his nerve to score from the penalty spot shortly after halftime.

The former Cork City player beat Edwin van der Sar after Gary Neville handled a skidding cross in the area.

United's pressure finally paid off after 73 minutes when Portugal forward Ronaldo produced a superb individual goal.
