KARACHI: Steps to boost fishing sector urged

KARACHI, Sept 24: Speakers at a training programme organized by the United Nation Industrial Development Organization have urged the fishermen to adopt modern methods of fishing to boost the dwindling seafood stock.

In this regard, they highlighted the efforts being made by the UNIDO and expressed hope that this training programme would greatly help them in learning new techniques being currently used in other countries.

With the adoption of new methods, the speakers maintained that the fishermen would be able to locate the centres of rare species which was very difficult in general conditions. They stressed the need for preserving rare species, which were destroyed by deep-sea trawlers and use of prohibited nets in the creeks.

They also urged the fishermen to adopt better hygienic conditions as being required by the European countries so as to boost the export of seafood to these countries.

The workshop was held at Karachi Fish Harbour and it was addressed by the representatives of Fishermen Cooperative Society, Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority, Marine Fisheries Department and a technical expert of UNIDO.—Staff Reporter
