Bank borrowing drops by Rs6.299bn in a week


ACCORDING to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended September 9, 2006, deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks stood at Rs2,821.939 billion, higher by Rs6.93 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,815.009 billon.

Commercial banks deposits showed an increase of Rs6.615 billion over the week to Rs2,809.011 billion, against preceding week’s Rs2,802.396 billion, while of specialized banks it rose by Rs0.315 billion to Rs12.928 billion, over previous week’s Rs12.613 billion.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks decreased during the week over preceding week’s figure. It fell to Rs331.164 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs337.463 billion, a fall of Rs6.299 billion. This was primarily due to a fall in the borrowings by commercial banks, which fell to Rs243.215 billion against previous week’s Rs249.553 billion, or by Rs6.338 billion, while borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs87.950 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs2,189.623 billion in the week under review, a fall of Rs3.605 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,193.228 billion. Advances by commercial banks fell to Rs2,091.371 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs2,096.488 billion, smaller by Rs5.117 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at Rs98.252 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks declined in the week by Rs2.454 billion to Rs799.748 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs802.202 billion. Commercial banks investment decreased to Rs787.802 billion, from earlier week’s Rs790.344 billion, smaller by Rs2.542 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at Rs11.946 billion against previous week’s Rs11.857 billion, larger by Rs0.089 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks increased by Rs2.313 billion during the week to stand at Rs301.025 billion against earlier week’s Rs298.712 billion. The figure for commercial banks also rose to Rs298.968 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs296.776 billion, a rise of Rs2.192 billion. For specialized banks there was an increase of Rs0.121 billion to Rs2.057 billion, against earlier week’s figure of Rs1.936 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs3,716.263 billion, lower by Rs0.21 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs3,716.473 billion. Meanwhile, commercial banks assets stood at Rs3,600.107 billion, lower by Rs0.868 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs3,600.975 billion. Specialized banks assets rose by Rs0.657 billion to Rs116.155 billion against previous week’s Rs115.498 billion.
