‘Ban on poppy cultivation to stay’

LANDI KOTAL, Sept 23: Cultivation of poppy will not be allowed in the Shalman area of Khyber Agency.

An assurance was given to the political administration by tribal maliks and councillors at a jirga held in the Loe Shalman on Saturday. The administration warned that if poppy was cultivated in the area, action would be taken under the collective responsibility law of the FCR and the anti-narcotics law. girl drowns: A minor girl, Ulfat, drowned in a pool of rainwater that had accumulated in front of her house in the Khogakhel area here on Friday.

Illegal checkpoint: Transporters and drivers have expressed concern over a checkpoint set up three days back on the main Peshawar-Torkham road by a tribal transporter, Zakir Sultankhel, to extort illegal ‘tax’ from vehicles. Transporters urged the administration to dismantle the checkpoint.—Correspondent
