Action against journalists condemned


LAHORE, Sept 23: The Labour Party Pakistan demonstrated outside the Lahore Press Club here on Saturday to condemn police highhandedness against newsmen and demanded accountability of the culprits.

The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with demand for arrest of DSP Mukhtar Shah and others involved in violence against newsmen.

LPP secretary-general Farooq Tariq said DSP Mukhtar Shah beat up journalists Wadood Mushtaq, Zahid Malik and Nazir who were on duty at a rally at the Minar-i-Pakistan on Sept 16. He kidnapped the mediamen through his subordinates. The government forced the cable operators to suspend the relay of ARY channel later.

The government later offered compensation of Rs150,000 to the newsmen who refused it.

He also said Apna TV reporter Wasim Farooq was beaten up during appearance of PML-N president Javed Hashmi in an accountability on May 25 while ARY’s Sheikh Zulqernain and cameraman Javed were tortured for trying to cover beating up of the people outside the Fortress Stadium on Aug 14. CNBC’s Nadeem Zaigham was beaten up by Ravi Town nazim Yousaf Ahad Malik’s men at Shahalam on Aug 24. No one had been proceeded against despite lodging of FIR.

Karachi Press Club joint secretary Saeed Sarbazi disappeared on Sept 19 and was left blindfolded on Shahrah-i-Faisal on Sept 22. Correspondent of Karachi daily Kawish from Golarchi, Mehruddin Marri, has been missing since July 2.
