BD storm toll rises to 76

Published September 23, 2006

DHAKA: The death toll from this week’s storm in Bangladesh reached 76 as rescuers found another 25 bodies of fishermen and sailors on Friday. In Sundarban alone 10 bodies were found.

But the largest rescue operation in recent years failed to trace a captain who fell from his ship after gutsy winds started swaying the vessel.

Over 1,500 fishermen, who went missing following the storm, are feared to have died.

Owners of fishing trawlers estimated about 500 trawlers had sunk in the storm.
