Tughlaq Cup at stake today in Lahore races
LAHORE, Sept 22: A small card of five events featuring the Mohammad Tughlaq Cup promises competitive racing action at the day/night Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the racecourse on Saturday.
Races scheduled for September 24 have been advanced by a day in view of the advent of the holy month of Ramazan which is likely to begin from Sunday.
There are 15 probable runners for the cup event, a class V division I handicap race to be gone over 1300 metres. Of them four come into reckoning.
They are Gorcee The Great, Sohna Billoo, Ministry and Al Ain. On recent form and performance Gorcee The Great has an edge over the others.
The other three should form the vanguard of challengers.
Former international hockey star, Munir Dar's filly Julia Robert is an outstanding performer during last season but she will be running after a long time.
The main supporting event, the Minchan Abad Plate Class IV Division I to be contested over 1300 metres has eight runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Of them River Dancer, Fajr and Toru Khan are noteworthy.
They are appearing on the course for the first time during this season starting in July this year.
On classification River Dancer stands out as he has beaten Fajr but with handicap advantage.
The handicap gives both an equal chance but the distance goes in favour of River Dancer. This will be the fifth and last race of the day.
The third race has 15 acceptors barring last minute withdrawals. Four of them have been performing very well during the current season. They are Moon Dazzler, Jago, Mamula and Hallow Dancer.
New Bhakkar looks a cut above in class as compared to his dozen rivals in the second race.
They way he ran second to War Admiral in his previous outing, there seems hardly any chance any of his rivals matching his speed and strides. Royal Fish, Bahar-e-Bhakkar and High Hope should fight for the less remunerative positions.
Tosca, Bachelor, Cherry's Own and Tornado look good among the acceptors in the first race. They should make the contest lively by their presence.
The opener has always provided thrills and shrills for the race-goers and the same is expected on Saturday too.
All the four above named are gaining form with each running and are expected to put up good show.
The first two races will be held over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres while the remaining three will be run over 1300 metres.
The first race will be held at 5.30pm.
