Vanni a crime, says CJ

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has said that Vanni is a crime and courts don’t accept decisions taken by panchayats.

He made the observation during the hearing of a Vanni case pertaining to Mianwali here on Thursday. A bench comprising Justice Chaudhry and Justice Syed Saeed Ashahd has taken up the case for hearing.

Parents of three women, Naheed, Khatoon Bibi and Aalim Khatoon, had given their hands to boys of their rival group in compensation for a murder committed in 1964.

Naheed told the court that she did not want to be married this way. The counsel for the boys prayed for five days time, pleading that they would settle the matter out of court.—Online
