Coffin removed from grave in Fort Manro

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Sept 19: The coffin containing remains of a British woman buried in the hilly resort of Fort Munro in 1886 has been removed allegedly by some foreigners.

Border Military Police (BMP) controlling the area suspended on Tuesday their entire staff posted at Fort Munro, 80km from here.

Confirming the ‘theft’, a BMP official said eight foreigners, including three women, arrived at the resort on September 15 and stayed there for two days.

“They left the area probably on the evening of September 17 with their escort,” he said.

The digging of the grave and removal of the coffin came to their knowledge on Tuesday when some people visited a peak, housing four graves dating back to 1886.

The graves were of a British woman, a girl, a doctor and a construction worker who were buried there after the Fort Munro had been developed at the time of the construction of the Dera-Quetta Road.

The BMP official said Risaldar Waqar Aziz had been assigned to conduct an inquiry and identify the guilty among the BMP personnel because foreigners’ stay in the area was banned.
