LAHORE, Sept 18: Punjab, with an overall aggregate of 4347 points, retained the winner’s trophy in the 2nd Inter-provincial Games which concluded with the closing ceremony at the Punjab Stadium here on Monday.

Punjab's athletes dominated the three-day mega event from day-one, finishing with a tally of 109 gold, 66 silver and 36 bronze medals.

The hosts stamped their authority which was evident from the fact that NWFP, which ended runners-up, conceded a clear lead to Punjab, managing just 2403 points with 23 gold, 45 silver and 54 bronze medals.

NWFP, however, had reasons to celebrate when their swimmer Adnan Hashim was declared as the best player of the Games after bagging nine gold medals to help the Frontier province win the swimming event with 169 points against 167 earned by Punjab.

Sindh contested closely with NWFP to come third with 2329 points. Sindh scooped up 20 gold, 28 silver and 60 silver medals, followed by Balochistan, who finished fourth with a tally of 1658 points, claiming 15 gold, 32 silver and 43 bronze.

Earlier, Sindh lifted the football trophy by winning the last match against Punjab 2-0 at the Railways Stadium.

Goals by Zahid and Jan helped Sindh take their aggregate to 150 points.

Balochistan, despite losing the last match to NWFP, earned the silver medal with 100 points.

NWFP won 3-1. Farjan scored two goals while Ayaz Babar added one. Chengaiz scored the solitary goal for Balochistan. NWFP finished third with 60 points while Punjab came fourth.

SWIMMING

A tally of nine gold medals from ace swimmer Adnan Hashim helped NWFP win the swimming event with a difference of just two points over Punjab.

NWFP bagged 169 points while claiming 13 gold, six silver and five bronze medals while Punjab finished second with 167 points. Punjab won six gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals, followed by Balochistan who had only three bronze medals. Sindh did not participate.

50m butterfly: 1. Adnan Hashim (NWFP) 30.49 seconds; 2. Moid Mustafa (Punjab); 3. Waleed (NWFP).

400m freestyle: 1. Adnan Hashim (NWFP) 5.24.84; 2. Moid Mustafa (Punjab); 3. Mohammad Asim (NWFP).

50m backstroke: 1. Moid Mustafa (Punjab) 34.21 seconds; 2. Shahid Irfan (Punjab); 3. Waleed (NWFP).

4x100m medley relay: 1. NWFP 5.03.42; 2. Punjab; 3. Balochistan.

50m freestyle: 1. Adnan Hashim (NWFP) 29.2 seconds; 2. Mursil Mahmood Butt (Punjab); 3. Usman Shahid (Punjab).

JUDO

Punjab with six gold, two silver and one bronze medals scored an aggregate of 116 points to win the judo trophy as two finals were decided on the last day.

NWFP came second with 79 points while Sindh remained third with 64 points and Balocistan finished fourth claiming 52 points.

WUSHU

Punjab won the wushu event by caliming eight gold and seven silver medals. Balochistan were also impressive securing runners-up position.

They notched up five gold, six silver and four bronze medals. NWFP came third while Sindh finished with fourth position.

Tao Shou: 1. Naeem Khan (NWFP); 2. Saif Ahmed (Punjab); 3. Mohammad Arif (Balochistan).

Nan Quan: 1. Qayyum (Balochistan); 2. Rizwan Akram (Punjab); 3. Faisal (Sindh).

Nan Gun: 1. Anis-ur-Rehman (Pujab); 2. Muzammal (Balochistan); 3. Rana Zahid (Sindh).

Nan Dao: 1. Sheraz (Punjab); 2. Mohammad Dawood (Balochistan); 3. Taj Mohammad (Sindh).

KARATE

NWFP proved too good in the karate event, winning it with 122 points.

Punjab obtained 103 points to gain second spot while Balochistan finished third with 101 points.

HANDBALL

Punjab defeated Balochistan 26-15 goal to win the handball event. Shakil and Akram scored six goals each for the winners.

For Balochistan Qasim was the main scorer with four goals. Sindh took third position after beating NWFP 16-11. Wasim contributed six goals for the winners while Waqar added four goals for the losers.

VOLLEYBALL

Punjab claimed gold medals both in men and women categories. Sindh snatched a silver medal in the women's event and bronze medal in the mens.

NWFP seized silver medal in the men's category and a bronze medal in women’s competition.

BOXING

Punjab annexed the boxing championship with 127 points. Balochistan fought hard and got the second position with 109 points.

Sindh claimed third spot with 77 points while NWFP finished fourth with 73 points.

SQUASH

Punjab scooped up a gold medal in squash while Sindh earned silver and NWFP a bronze medal in the boys. Punjab also snatched a gold medal in the girls section while Sindh remained runners-up.

BASEBALL

Punjab won gold medal beating NWFP in the last league match 12-1. Balochistan gained second position.

SOFTBALL

Punjab snatched gold medal after beating Sindh 18-2 in the last women’s match. NWFP gained third position.

TENNIS

Punjab claimed two gold medals in the lawn tennis event. In the team event Punjab beat NWFP.

In the individual, Tanvir Ashiq carved out a win against Ahmed Aslam of Punjab to earn gold.

Khurram Nazir also of Punjab settled with bronze medal.

TUG-OF-WAR

Punjab with 150 points won the tug-of-war contest.

NWFP secured the second position with 100 points while Balochistan (60) and Sindh (40) remained third and fourth, respectively.

NETBALL

Sindh won the netball competition beating Punjab 21-18 score. NWFP gained the third position after earning 22-9 win against Balochistan.

WEIGHTLIFTING

At Punjab University Old campus Ground, Punjab won the competition with a tally of 77 points. They won seven gold and one silver medals to stamp their supremacy.

Balochistan obtained second position by securing 60 points. They won one gold, five silver and two bronze medals. NWFP earned third position with 32 points.

They won one silver and four bronze medals.
