Quince outpaces Golden Goal

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 18: Fancied bay colt, Quince fought off the charge by the second favourite colt, Golden Goal to win by a neck the prestigious supporting event during day/night Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman and trained by A.B. Malik, the winner survived an objection raised by jockey Aamir Pervez, rider of second placed Golden Goal for alleged pressing of his mount in the home stretch, a tactics to win a lost battle that failed.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards saw the video of the race and from their own observation over-ruled this frivolous objection.

Jut Bahadur finished third, half a length behind, while Royal Gambler finished fourth over six lengths further back. In all, six ran after the last-minute withdrawal of Cobbler from the race.

This was the second successive victory of the colt, Quince, owned by Mohammad Qasim Choudhry who under went moments of joy and grief at the same time as the stewards were in meeting to dispose off the objection.

Shahid Rehman met with a great success, riding home four winners, a feat he and jockey M. Hanif had achieved in the past. However, Shahid’s feat included a hat-trick of victories too. He partnered Bahar-e-Bhakkar, Jago, War Admiral and finally Quince.

The most impressive winner of Sunday was the chestnut filly, Chill, who cast a chill on turf accountants as connection backed it from two to one down to 40 to 100 as confidently as a surety bond.

The Putra-Sweety daughter mauled chestnut colt Sohna Billoo, beating him by over six lengths. Apprentice Ahmad Shah rode Chill trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, many times champion trainer and jockey.

The LRC stewards took strong notice of unsatisfactory riding of three riders and fined them rupees one thousand each. Those punished were M. Imran (High Hope), Ali Raza (Dogar's Gift) and Pervrz Bhatti (Wah Cisco Wah).

Meanwhile, the LRC stewards have decided to hold next Winter Meeting on Saturday instead of Sunday because of the advent of holy month of Ramazan, which is likely to begin from Sunday.
