Punjab continue their dominance in Provincial Games

LAHORE, Sept 17: Defending champions Punjab with a tally of 59 gold medals were well on course to win the 2nd Inter-provincial games on the penultimate day of the competition on Sunday.
Punjab dominated the athletics event as they clinched 17 out of the 19 gold medals on offer.
Eight more finals will be held on Monday, the last day of the event.
In other disciplines, Punjab claimed seven golds in wrestling, six in gymnastics, five in swimming, four each in wushu and cycling, three apiece in bodybuilding and weightlifting, one in table tennis, two in judo and table tennis and another five in taekwondo.
In athletics, Pubjab’s Madeeha Latif performed brilliantly to win five individual gold medals and one in the team event.
Madeeha won gold medals in the long jump, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, javelin throw and the 4x400m relay.
Meanwhile, the organisers could face trouble in finalising the final position for the second consecutive day no members of the tabulation committee reported at the National Hockey Stadium.
When contacted, a member of the committee on the condition of anonymity said that they were not reporting because the organizers did not give protocol to the president of POA, Syed Arif Hasan, during the opening ceremony on Saturday night.
He added the attitude of the organisers was not friendly towards the tabulation committee when they held the first edition.
But in the decisive match, NWFP’s pair of Mehmood Khan-Jahangir Khan were declared winnera after Yasir Khan and Saad Baloch conceded the match having lost the first set 6-1.
In the individual semi-finals, Tanvir Ashiq (Punjab) qualified for the final beating Khurram Nazir (Punjab) 6-4, 7-5. He will meet Amjad Islam, who defeated Jaffar Khan (Sindh) 6-0, 6-4.
TABLE TENNIS
Punjab men defeated Sindh 3-1 to win the gold medal.
BASKETBALL
Two matches were played in the basketball event at Mayo Garden Hall. NWFP defeated Balochistan 69-45 while Punjab beat Sindh 87-48.
WRESTLING
Punjab claimed seven gold medals to sweep the wrestling event at the National Sports Coaching an Training Centre.
NWFP remained second with six silver and one bronze medal while Sindh obtained one silver and four bronze. Balochistan obtained two bronze medals.

JUDO
Punjab and Sindh judokas claimed two gold medals each.
Mohammad Sadiq Yousuf and Irfan Azam seized gold medal for Punjab in 50 and 66kgs classes. For Sindh Tariq and Asif obtained gold medal in 56 and 73kgs classes.
BODYBUILDING
Punjab with 39 points won the bodybuilding challenge trophy. NWFP remained second with 25 points while Sindh and Balochistan could earn only 12 points each.
FOOTBALL
Balochistan defeated Punjab 3-1 with Rabbani scoring in the 50th and the 64th minute while Chengaiz scored in the 70th minute. Nadeem scored the only goal for Punjab in the 80th minute.
In other match Sindh beat NWFP 2-0 with Waseem (71st minute) and M Jan (75th) finding the net.
SWIMMING
NWFP maintained their supremacy with a tally of eight gold, six silver and two bronze medals.
NWFP, who clinched four gold medals on first day, added as many more to remain leaders. Punjab are behind with a tally of 21 medals including five gold, seven silver and nine bronze. Balochistan claimed two bronze while Sindh could not end the winning drought.

NETBALL
Punjab beat NWFP 34-11 while Sindh defeated Balochistan 38-7.
CYCLING
NWFP dominated the second day in the cycling winning two golds. First their team of Shazia, Faiza, Rabiya and Aisha Hayat clinched a gold in the 5km team time trial clocking 11 mins 40.86 secs.
Shazia Mubarak gave NWFP another gold medal winning the six km road race clocking 14.15.21.
Munazza Rahman (Punjab) and Moona Khan (Punjab) claimed silver and bronze medal.
