NEW YORK, Sept 16: There are bright prospects of Pakistan getting endorsement for the chairmanship of the Group of 77 (G-77), the largest Third World coalition in the UN.
Pakistan announced its candidature about a week ago and circulated it to members of the Asia Group from which the next chairman is to be elected.
Pakistan has been actively lobbying for support and, according to diplomatic sources here, so far it has received positive signals from many member countries. The efforts will continue on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session that opens next week.
“There are bright chances of Pakistan getting elected unopposed,” a senior diplomat told Dawn, saying that so far no other country from the Asia Group had announced its candidature.
The final decision would be taken by the group by next month. If Pakistan gets the green light it would assume chairmanship in January 2007 for a one-year period.
