Imran’s twin strike help Punjab beat Sindh 5-2

LAHORE, Sept 16: Imran Abbas struck twice to give Punjab an overwhelming 5-2 win against Sindh while Balochistan registered 3-1 triumph over NWFP in the 2nd Inter-provincial Games (hockey) at the National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Punjab made a flying start and led the first half 4-0 but could not maintain their momentum and could manage only one goal in the second half.

Imran opened the scoring in the 12th minute while Abdul Rehman made it 2-0 seven minutes later.

Imran scored his second in the 27th minute to make the score 3-0 while Rashid consolidated the lead by converting in the 32nd minute to make it 4-0.

After the resumption, Imran Malik added a goal in the 42nd minute as Punjab led 5-0 lead. But Riasat (50th minute) and Sameer (62nd minute) reduced the margin for Sindh.

Balochistan and NWFP failed to break the deadlock in the first session of play. Azam then put Balochistan in the lead in the 40th minute by scoring a field goal while Rauf made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. NWFP reduced the lead to 2-1 through Alamgir in the 58th minute but Junaid put Balochistan 3-1 ahead in the 65th minute to seal the fate of the match.Balochistan will face Sindh On Sunday.

WRESTLING

Twenty-eight bouts were decided in two rounds of the wrestling event at the National Sports Training and Coaching Centre.

Fourteen competitions were held in the first round and as many in the second in which the grapplers from Punjab displayed their domination.

First-round results:

55kgs: Dildar (Punjab) bt Kashif (Sindh); Saeed-ur-Rehman (NWFP) awarded walk over against Zamir Khan (Balochistan);

60kgs: Aamir Hafeez (Punjab) bt Saeed (NWFP); Mohib (Sindh) bt Akmal (Balochistan).

66kgs: M Ashraf (Punjab) bt Niamatullah (NWFP); Sajid (Sindh) bt Nazir Ahmed (Balochistan).

74kgs: Adnan (Punjab) bt Mohammad Din (NWFP); Tariq (Sindh) bt Rafi (Balochistan).

84kgs: Usman Shahid (Punjab) bt Mujibur Rehman; Niaz (Sindh) bt Abdul Waris (Balochistan).

96kgs: Khan Mohammad (NWFP) bt Habib (Sindh); Sohaib Butt (Punjab) Tanvir Iqbal (Balochistan).

Above 96 kgs: Abdul Sattar (NWFP) bt Zaman (Sindh); Zamir Butt (Punjab) bt Jamaluddin (Balochistan).

Second round:

55kgs: Saeedur Rehman (NWFP) bt Kashif (Sindh); Dildar (Punjab) got walk over against Tanvir Khan (Balochistan).

60kgs: Mehtab (Sindh) bt Saeed Asad (Balochistan); Aamer Hafeez (Punjab) bt M Akmal (Balochistan).

66kgs: Niamatullah (NWFP) bt Sajid (Sindh); Ashraf (Punjab) bt Nazir (Balochistan).

74kgs: Mohammad Din (NWFP) awarded walk over against Tariq (Sindh); Adnan (Punjab) bt Mohammad Rafi (Balochistan).

84 kgs: Mujibur Rehman (NWFP) bt Niaz (Sindh); Usman Shahid (Punjab) bt Abdul Waris (Balcohsitan).

96 kgs: Sohaib Butt (Punjab) bt Habib (Sindh); Khan Mohammad (NWFP) got walk over against Azam (Balochistan).

Above 96kgs:Zunair Butt (Punjab) bt Abdul Sattar (NWFP); Jamaluddin (Balochistan) bt Zaman (Sindh).
