Inter-Provincial Games: Punjab athletes hog limelight on opening day

LAHORE, Sept 16: Punjab clinched three gold medals out of a total of five at stake to reign supreme on the first day of the 2nd Inter-Provincial Games athletics event at the Punjab Stadium on Saturday.
Punjab won two gold medals in the men's competition and one in the women.
The first gold medal for Punjab came through Rizwan in the discus throw contest when he hurled the discus at 37.43m. Ali Ahmed gave Balochistan a silver medal while Tahir bagged a bronze.
Nabeel snatched second gold for the hosts when he clocked 22.01 sec to win 200m race. Saqib, also of Punjab, seized a silver medal while Attaullah earned a bronze medal for Balochistan.
But while Punjab dominated other events, Balochistan excelled in the 5000m race when Hashim covered the distance in 17 minutes 19.52 secs to claim gold medal. Shahzad, also of Balochistan, earned silver while K. Badshah of Sindh won the bronze medal.
Zubia of Punjab claimed a gold medal in the discus throw with a distance of 22.26m. Razia and Sadaf, both hailing from Sindh, claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.
Sindh notched up a gold medal in the 1500m event when Khizra clocked six minutes 26 secs to cover the distance. Nazima Naz (Punjab) and Komal (Sindh) claimed silver and bronze medals.

Women’s:

Men:

NWFP with four gold and two silver medals stole the show in the swimming event at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex pool.
Punjab with two gold, four silver and five bronze medals, were at the second position. Balochistan came third with a bronze medal while Sindh swimmers returned without a medal to their name.
Results:
200m freestyle: Adnan Hashim (NWFP) 2.27.23; Syed Mohammad Abdul Moid Mustafa (Punjab); Mursil Mahmood Butt (Punjab).
Punjab made a flying start in the volleyball event winning its matches both in men and women's section at the Iqbal Park Sprots Complex.
In men's section Punjab defeated Balochistan 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-3).
In second match, NWFP outplayed Sindh 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-10).
After winning the first set easily, Sindh recovered and won the second set winning it to level the score. But NWFP speed up the pace of their attack and won the two remaining set easily to complete the win.
In women's section Punjab registered an overwhelming win against NWFP by 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-6).
KARATE
Balochistan martial arts athletes made their presence felt in the karate event at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex by winning three gold medals in the four competitions held on first day.
In the individual kata, Balochistan claimed a gold medal through Abdul Bari. Baz Mohammad snatched a silver medal for the NWFP while Abdul Rahim earned a bronze medal for Sindh.
In the team kata, Balochistan comprising Abdul Bari,
Hameedullah, Saeed Ahmed claimed a gold medal. The NWFP team of Baz Mohammad, Kashif and Jawad earned silver medal while Punjab consisting of Abdul Salam, Aadil and Aamir, settled for bronze medal.
In the individual Kata, Abdul Bari of Balochistan clinched the gold medal. Baz Mohammad of NWFP was runners-up while Abdul Rehm (Sindh)and Shabir Ahmed (Punjab) obtained third and fourth positions respectively.
In 80kg plus event, Pervaiz Iqbal of Punjab notched up a gold medal. Basim Khan of NWFP remained second. Karamatullah (Balochistan) got third position.
In below 80kg contest, Sir Bulund of Balochistan gave his province a third gold medal. Basim Khan of Punjab remained second while Karamatullah of Balochistan finished third.
TABLE TENNIS
Sindh claimed gold medal in the women's team event table tennis at the Mayo Garden by winning all three matches.
They defeated NWFP 3-0 in the opening contest and then emerged victorious against Balochistan and Punjab by identical margin to clinch a gold medal. Punjab claimed a silver medal after beating Balochistan and NWFP with an identical margin of 3-0. NWFP remained third.
In the men's category, Punjab and Sindh have qualified for the final. Punjab beat NWFP 3-1 and Balochistan 3-0. Sindh registered a 3-0 triumph against Balochistan and NWFP respectively to qualify for the final which will be played on Sunday.
SOFTBALL
In the opening match Sindh beat NWFP 16-6 at the Government College for Women University. From Sindh, Zainab and Meesal scored three runs each. Fatima and Noor scored two each while Aneela, Nameer, Ayesha and Amna made one score apiece.
BASEBALL
Punjab and NWFP earned victories in the baseball at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex.
Punjab defeated Balochistan by a big margin 13-2. NWFP trounced Sindh 12-7 in the second match.
NETBALL
Punjab beat Balochistan in the opening match 38-2. Sindh beat NWFP 28-12 in the second match.
BASKETBALL
Punjab beat Balochistan by a wide margin 102-36. The half time score was 50-19 in Punjab's favour.
SQUASH
The boys and girls competitions in the squash event started at the Punjab Squash Complex.
