COLOMBO, Sept 16: After a day of relative calm Sri Lankan troops resumed attacks on Tamil Tiger positions in the northeast on Friday — three days after the government and the LTTE agreed to resume peace negotiations next month.
A spokesman said the army began targeting LTTE strongholds in the eastern Trincomalee district after the alleged killing of four civilians in the northeast by the Tigers.
In the northern Jaffna peninsula, Tamil Tigers fired mortars at the military, injuring two soldiers.
The fresh clashes come on the heels of Norway’s announcement earlier this week that the government and LTTE had agreed to meet in Oslo next month.
