ISLAMABAD, Sept 15: Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) is likely to permit the use of timber for reconstruction in earthquake-affected areas, an official source said on Friday.

“Erra is intending to develop timber designs as well as a criteria for it,” the source said.

Erra has already consulted with the United Nations system in the country in this regard and is seeking further assistance for the criteria development.

The move is feared to escalate deforestation in the region. Sources said the authorities had to resort to the use of timber because of lack of timely and proper decision-making.

NGOs involved in reconstruction would be debating this issue next week. If the use of timber is allowed then it is being anticipated that Erra will consider slashing the compensation package.

Meanwhile, the transitional shelter policy is expected to be announced on the occasion of the first anniversary of the earthquake falling on October 8.

World Bank, one of the major donors of Erra projects particularly the rural housing and livelihood schemes, has expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved by Erra in reconstruction and rehabilitation projects.

The WB mission reviewed progress on housing and livelihood projects and capacity-building schemes. It also reviewed the status of health, education, roads and water supply.

Erra in a press release issued here quoted the World Bank as having rated the livelihood project as highly satisfactory. The bank recognises payment under livelihood support programme to 201,598 families out of a total of 240,695 families a success.

“The WB expressed its full confidence and appreciation for the rural housing project, which in the assessment of the bank has achieved impressive milestones.

The report by the mission, the Erra statement said, clearly acknowledges efforts of the authority in successfully completing rural housing damage assessment by covering 600,000 housing units, MoU signing with 450,000 families and disbursement to 75 per cent of the eligible families.

Erra said WB had rated its progress in health, education, roads, water supply, environment and social sectors as according to schedule.
