KARACHI, Sept 14: The City Council on Thursday unanimous adopted a resolution condemning the August 26 killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti in a military action in Kohlu and demanding an inquiry into the tragic incident through a judge of the Supreme Court.
The Council, paying glowing tributes to the services rendered by the Jamhoori Watan Party chief, described his demise as ‘a great national tragedy’ and said that Nawab Bugti was a brave man principled man who laid down his life for the rights of Baloch people.
The members noted with serious concern that the Baloch leader’s body had not been handed over to his legal heirs. They observed that such a shameful act could not be expected from even an enemy force.
The meeting, chaired by Naib City Nazim Nasreen Jalil, urged the government to hand over Nawab Bugti’s body to the bereaved family.
It further observed that use of force to subjugate those demanding their legitimate rights always resulted in great tragedies. In this context, it referred to the East Pakistan debacle and regretted that instead of learning a lesson from the past mistakes, the same blunders were being repeated.
The resolution urged the government to find a peaceful solution to the Balochistan issue through dialogue and stop using brute force in that province.
Earlier, members of treasury and opposition benches condemned the military operation in Balochistan, and stressed on political solution to the problems of the troubled province.
They said that use of force had never helped resolve a political problem, rather this had always complicated the same as was witnessed in Balochistan.
Opposition leader Saeed Ghani said the use of force had created a wedge between the armed forces and the people which, he said, was harmful to national interests.
He asked the rulers to mend their ways and let the people’s representatives rule over the country, saying that Pakistan had not been created by military generals, but the masses who had the right to choose their rulers from among themselves. He said that Nawab Bugti continued his struggle to get people their legitimate rights till the last drop of his blood.
Another member Saifuddin alleged that military rulers had proved their incompetence to rule over the country, saying that they had created administrative, political and economic crisis in the country.
He criticised the military operations in Waziristan and Balochistan and said such actions were against the national interest.
He urged the allies of the military-led coalition to quit the government in protest against the military operations.
Treasury members Masood Mehmood and Asif Siddiqui also condemned the brutal killing of Nawab Bugti, and said that no countrymen could appreciate the way Nawab Bugti had been killed and buried.
They argued that it was not the first time that a military operation had been resorted to for resolving a political problem. They recalled that similar operations had been carried out in 1974 and 1992, but the Haq Parast group had always opposed military operations against civilians.
Shamim Wasi, Abdul Rashid Beg, Juman Darwan, Zarina Abdul Qadir, Mehrunnisa Baloch, Mohammad Akram, Mohammad Islam, Abdul Razak Sangani, Ahsan Siddiqui, Sheikh Meboobur Rehman, Syed Taver Ali and Rukhsana Faisal also paid tributes to the JWP leader and condemned his killing.
