KARACHI: Policeman shot dead near prison

KARACHI, Sept 14: A police official was shot dead by unknown persons near the Central Prison Karachi on Thursday night. Police said that Sub-Inspector Malik Riaz posted at the Jamshed Quarters investigation wing was going back from the police station to his home in Dalmia on a motorcycle. When he reached near the main gate of the Central Prison, unknown persons on a motorcycle opened fire at him and sped away. The suspects also took away his service pistol from the spot.

A senior police officer described the incident as target killing.

The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The deceased had left the police station at the conclusion of a press conference in which police had apprised the media of its narcotics seizure from a land cruiser in Jamshed town earlier during the day.

KILLED: A doctor was killed in a cell snatching incident at Mauripur Road on Thursday night.

Police said that Dr Khalid was passing in his car from the Mauripur Road; he was intercepted by unknown persons on motorcycles, near Ghulaman-i-Abbas School.

As the doctor offered resistance, the armed suspects shot him and fled with his cellphone and other valuables.

He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Dr Khalid succumbed to his wounds in the operation theater, police said.

LOOTED: As many as 6 armed men looted a house in North Nazimabad taking away gold ornaments, cash and a licensed pistol around noon on Thursday.

Complainant, Shaikh Nazeer Ahmed told Dawn that initially three suspects barged into his house C/167 in Block D North Nazimabad when a young boy of the house was buying vegetables from a pushcart.

The armed men collected all the family members in one room of the house and started collecting valuables. The bandits took away 5 mobile phones, cash, jewelry and prize bonds worth Rs500,000 to Rs600,000.

According to the family members, three armed accomplices of the bandits were waiting outside their house.
