Dollar weaker against euro

LONDON, Sept 14: The dollar was slightly weaker against the euro on Thursday following retail sales data in the US, traders said. The euro rose to $1.2737 in late European trading from $1.2690 late in New York on Wednesday.

The dollar stood at 117.52 yen, from 117.67 yen late on Wednesday.

US retail sales growth faltered during August, but not as much as anticipated, official figures showed on Thursday.

The Commerce Department said growth in retail sales slowed to 0.2 per cent after rising 1.4 per cent in July. Nevertheless, the August performance topped predictions of a 0.1 per cent decline.

“The dollar has seen some support from the data, but ahead of tomorrow's inflation data and upcoming G7 meeting reaction is likely to be limited,” said Calyon analyst Mitul Kotecha.

The euro was boosted by comments from European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet who said the bank remained on the alert about inflationary dangers in the 12 countries that share the euro.

The Swiss franc eased back despite a quarter-point rate hike by the Swiss National Bank.

The euro was changing hands at $1.2737 against $1.2690 on Wednesday, 149.72 yen (149.34), 0.6745 pounds (0.6761).—AFP
