HYDERABAD: Call to speed up relief work

HYDERABAD, Sep 12: Sindh Corps Commander Lt-Gen Ahsan Azhar Hayat on Tuesday visited rain-affected areas of Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas.

He called for efficient use of existing resources to ensure disposal of stagnant water from low-lying areas so that marooned people could be provided relief and normality could be restored.

He was accompanied by GOC Maj-Gen Abdul Aziz Tariq and Brigadier Ghulam Murtaza.

Gen Ahsan went round units no 2, 6, 8, 11 of Latifabad taluka, Naseem Nagar, Sehrish Nagar and Sheedi village in Qasimabad.

He said that the pace of rescue and relief work should be accelerated for providing relief to people by draining out stagnant water.

He expressed satisfaction over performance of armed forces and the civil administration.

He was informed by Brigadier Ghulam Murtaza that the rainfall this years heviest since 1962 which wreaked havoc on the district, paralysing civic life in Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas.

He said that existing drainage system had collapsed and pumping stations could not effectively dispose of rainwater.

He said that Latifabad and Sheedi Goth and three villages near the Indus river in Qasimabad were worst affected as people were marooned.

He spoke about troop’s efforts for relief and rescue operation since September 8 with the result that people were evacuated.
