KARACHI, Sept 11: Islamia Club proved to be a force to reckon with when they claimed men’s and women’s team event titles at the 35th Karachi Table Tennis Championship by outwitting their opponents in straight sets on Monday night.

Islamia Club brushed aside Sunset Club 3-0 in the men’s final to win the Essa Mohammad trophy while their women outfit defeated Jamia Millia School by an identical scoreline to annex late Saeeda Sultana Trophy.

The KTTA has named the running trophies after two former players who won the men’s and women’s individual titles at the first national table tennis championship. Any team winning three times in a row will be entitled to keep the trophy.

Hassan Haider who made his International debut at the just concluded South Asian Games put Islamia Club in front by getting the better of junior international Ahmer 4-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.

Reigning Sindh champion Kashif consolidated the position beating former national junior champion Faraz 11-5, 11-9, 12-10. Yousuf was stretched to full distance by Mubashir before winning 11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6.

Though the women also romped home, their scores were not a true reflection of the contest. Qurat-ul-Ain and Tayyaba survived some anxious moments before winning while Urooj was extended to four sets in the opener.
