KARACHI: Spelling Bee contest: Six teams emerge as city round finalists

KARACHI, Sept 11: As many as six school teams emerged successful on the first day of the Karachi-round competitions of the third “Dawn in Education-National Spelling Bee” championship on Monday.

The successful teams coming out from three different age-group competitions will now take seats again in the Karachi finals commencing on September 18. A total of 20 teams contested in each age category, showing their good command over spelling of words and vocabulary, said a coordinator for the national contest.

Pronouncer of the show was Sue Gilbert, while the judges for three different age groups were Lenny Menezes, Nabil Alvi, Seema Khan and Hira Sajjad. Competition is being organised at the Bahria Auditorium.

Winner schools of Monday events were: 9-11 age group-Nasra School (morning shift) and Army Public School, Faisal; 12-14 age group- Little Folks School, North Nazimabad and Nasra School Malir campus (morning shift) and 15-17 age group-Beacon Light Academy and Foundation Public School, PNS Shifa.

The city rounds of the Spelling Bee competition are scheduled to start at Lahore from September 13 and at Islamabad from September 21.

About 1,287 students belonging to 240 schools have been registered for Karachi competitions, while another 684 students of 100 schools for Lahore and 585 students of 80 schools for Islamabad competitions.
