Umpiring standards in NZ game irks coach Shahnaz
Monchengladbach, Sept 9: Hockey coach Shahnaz Sheikh on Saturday criticised the standard of umpiring in Pakistan’s World Cup match against New Zealand on Friday which ended in a 4-4 draw.
“I have not much to say about umpiring, but it left a lot to be desired” he said. “I am not going to protest againt umpires (Amarjeet of Malaysia & David Leiper of Scotland) but the penalty strokes awarded by them - one in each half - need to be reviewed.”
The former Olympian expressed satisfaction over his team's performance in Friday’s match. “My boys came from behind on three occasions and it is no mean achievement.”
Shahnaz was all praise for Rehan Butt’s goal in the match and said it should be adjudged as the goal of the World Cup. “It was a spectacular goal by a fine player.”
Commenting on Sohail Abbas’ lacklustre show on Friday where he failed to convert any of the four penalty corners, Shahnaz said: “Well it was disappointing but who knows Sohail may have kept his best for coming matches.”
“I am satisfied that we managed a point. It is better than not to have any. I think the team will play better in next three games.”— Agencies
