Govt, MMA step up drive against rights bill
LAHORE, Sept 9: The government and MMA have accelerated their campaign for and against the women’s rights bill. Pakistan Muslim League president Shujaat Husain and Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi met a delegation of `prominent’ ulema representing various schools of thought at the chief minister’s secretariat on Saturday.
They, according to a handout, told their guests that women rights bill would be reflective of Islamic values.
Shujaat said the purpose of the bill was to rid women of the injustices which were already forbidden in the religion.
Pervaiz Elahi termed opposition to the bill a bid to deprive women of their legitimate Islamic rights.
Meawhile, addressing central training workshop for the Jamaat-i-Islami women office-bears here at Mansoorah, party chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that political turncoats were being used to make ground for amendments to the Hudood laws.
“The people of Pakistan will not allow the General to change Islamic culture of the country,” a press release quoted him as saying.
The JI women wing announced a demonstration against the bill outside the parliament in Islamabad on Monday (tomorrow).
