ISLAMABAD Sept 8: Under pressure from both the opposition groups and coalition parliamentarians on the proposed protection of women’s rights bill, the government is embarking on a series of meetings at different levels.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain are spearheading the consultations.
In one such meeting with a group of lawmakers of the Pakistan Muslim League and allied parties, led by Mr Hussain, the premier said on Friday, “The government will ensure that all laws are in conformity with Islamic teachings and the guidelines laid down in Quran and Sunnat.
The prime minister said the bill had been introduced in an effort to safeguard women’s rights and ensure speedy justice and security for them which was a priority of the government.
He said the steps taken by the government to empower women were unprecedented in the history of the country and more steps would be taken to uplift the status of women in society.
He mentioned various steps the government had taken to ensure women’s participation in different fields of life to enable them to contribute to national development
The parliamentarians apprised the prime minister of development schemes being implemented in their constituencies. They said the PML and allied parties were making untiring efforts to provide basic amenities to masses.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education Zobaida Jalal, Minister for Law and Justice Wasi Zafar, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azeem, chief whip in the National Assembly Nasrullah Dreshak, MNAs Rana Tariq Javed, Saima Akhtar Bharwana, Mazhar Qureshi, Rana Umar Nazir and others.
