Byron takes home September Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 6: Fancied bay colt Byron displayed all the qualities of a good fighter to win the September Cup during the first day/night Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Tuesday.

The meeting was scheduled to be held on Sunday but was postponed for two days due to inclement weather.

From a tricky inside draw, Byron was given a gem of a ride by jockey M. Hanif.

Byron, a 70 to 100 favourite, fought a neck-to-neck battle with bay filly Dil Vil, who succumbed to top weight of nine stone three pounds and finally beaten by over a length.

Windy Trace and Big Bird completed the frame among eight starters.

Trainer Haji Fazal Hadi excelled among riders and trainers by saddling a brace of winners. He sent out Capaletti and Eid in the first and fifth race, respectively.

The former champion trainer was unlucky to miss a treble when his filly Tan Man Dhan was disqualified after winning the third race.

Riding boy Sajjad Hussain on Al Murad placed third behind Tan Man Dhan and Sohna Billoo lodged an objection against the winner for crossing without being two lengths ahead of him.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards upheld the objection and disqualified Tan Man Dhan.

Sohna Billoo was declared the winner. Jockey Salahuddin II, who rode the filly Tan Man Dhan was suspended from riding for two weeks.

The most impressive among the Tuesday winners was the filly Eid.

Showing a glimpse of her past performance Eid beat Daisy Against All by six lengths easily. Owned by Malik Hamid Ali Noon, who is holidaying in Spain, the filly is trained by Haji Fazal Hadi.
