SUKKUR, Sept 6: The secretary-general of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) and Sindh chapter of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has said that MMA lawmakers in the Sindh assembly and Senate will tender resignations as a token protest against the Hudood Ordinance amendment bill.

Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, who is also senator, strongly criticized the presentation of the bill in the National Assembly, despite strong opposition from the MMA. He termed the presentation an act of dictatorship.

Talking to party leaders in Sukkur on Wednesday, he said the government was not aware about the sensitivity of the issue as amendment to the Hudood Ordinance could result into a big crisis for the government. No one had the right to amend the Hudood Allah, therefore the MMA would not allow the government to make amendments, he said.

Dr Soomro said the MMA lawmakers would not only sacrifice their seats in the assemblies, but also their lives as the issue was related to Islamic belief.

Expressing sorrow over PPP’s support to the government, he said the government and People’s Party had a common stand on pro-US policies and anti-Islamic agenda. It had proved that the PPP was the actual “B” team of the government, he added.

He also regretted statements issued by some scholars against the MMA and in favour of the PPP. He said it was wrong, rather the MMA had always opposed anti-Sindh actions and atrocities against the PPP and nationalists.

He announced that the MMA would intensify its protest campaign against the government about amendment in the Hudood Ordinance from the forthcoming Friday.

FOUR BANDITS HELD: Four wanted bandits were arrested after an alleged encounter with the police, near the central jail, Sukkur, on Wednesday evening.

The bandits were nabbed while they were moving in a car No AA-9432, which was intercepted by a police party near the central jail Sukkur.

The bandits allegedly opened fire on the police when it was asked to stop.

The police, in retaliation, targeted the tyres of the car which flattened as a result of heavy firing.
